Outwood House is the perfect base for exploring the vibrant city of Leeds and has easy access to the Yorkshire Dales. Whether you are staying for business or pleasure, with free parking and a variety of public transport links there is so much to discover – and the opportunity to relax when you return to Outwood House.
Whether you are a parent visiting a student in Leeds, a cricket fan going to Headingley, a foodie wanting to try Bavette or you’re just looking for a haven of tranquillity – Outwood House is your country home in the city.
Location
Outwood House is in Horsforth, some five miles from the centre of Leeds. There are two off-street parking spaces – subject to availability. Free on-street parking is available along Outwood Lane.
Public transport includes Kirkstall Forge station (1 mile), Horsforth station (1.5 miles) and Leeds station (5 miles) all with Uber taxis readily available to book. The 27, 50 and 50A buses from the city centre stop at the bottom of Outwood Lane, which is a six minute walk to Outwood House. The 33 and 34 buses stop at the A65 end of the Lane – 13 minute walk to Outwood House.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is four miles away. Arrow Cars is the taxi company immediately outside the terminal. The A1 Flyer bus from the terminal stops at the A65 end of Outwood Lane.
City
Leeds is a vibrant city with five universities: Leeds Trinity (2 miles), Leeds Beckett (Headingley campus 2.5 miles), the University of Leeds (4 miles), Leeds Arts (4.5 miles) and Leeds Conservatoire (6.5 miles).
The city centre (5 miles) is home to Opera North, Northern Ballet and Leeds Playhouse. The Royal Armouries is a free national museum and the Henry Moore Institute is part of the inspirational Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle.
If sport is your passion the stadiums in Headingley (3 miles) are home to Yorkshire Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos. Elland Road (6.5 miles) is home to the only professional football club in the city – Leeds United.
And if you love exploring cities, Bradford (8 miles) is home to the World Heritage site of Saltaire and the free National Science and Media Museum. Harrogate (14 miles) is famous for its wonderfully relaxing spa at the Turkish Baths as well as the original Bettys tea room and the RHS gardens at Harlow Carr. York (29 miles) is packed with historical sites including the Minster and Roman city walls as well as the free National Railway Museum and the JORVIK Viking centre.
Country
For local walks in the woods and along the Leeds-Liverpool canal, or travelling further into the Yorkshire Dales, Outwood House gives you a taste of the country in the city.
Leeds is in Airedale and you can walk through woods to Kirkstall Abbey (1.5 miles) and return along the canal. York Gate (3 miles) is a magical one-acre garden inspired by the arts and crafts movement. We can also give you guides to other short local walks in the woods around Outwood House.
Malhamdale is where the River Aire starts at the spectacular Malham Cove (33 miles). The beautiful and geologically rare limestone pavement on top of the cove has spectacular views. It also features in the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
In neighbouring Wharfedale you can ramble on Ilkley Moor (12 miles), visit the stately home Harewood House (8 miles) or Bolton Abbey (18.5 miles). Grassington (28 miles) is a small market town that features in the 2020 TV adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small.
Nidderdale includes the World Heritage site of Fountains Abbey (25 miles) and the small market town of Pateley Bridge (23 miles). Brimham Rocks (21 miles) has dramatic moorland rock formations – and is where Elspeth and Richard, the owners of Outwood House, were engaged to be married one cold December day over thirty years ago!
